There are almost 300 channels in Europe dedicated to broadcasting news, and more than 170 of them are based in the EU, according to a new report published by the European Audiovisual Observatory. Dominating the landscape for national TV news are private channels with more than 80% of them owned by private companies. Not surprisingly those with the widest distribution in Europe are the pan-European channels CNN International, BBC World News, Al Jazeera (English), Euronews (English) and Russia Today. The number of free DTT news channels has increased from 16 to 43 over the past 4 years. This new 100-page report on the TV news market in Europe covers 38 countries and is free to download here.
